Reducing waste at Tom Lemon Joinery to the bare minimum is a key driving force in the business model. Below are a few examples we are working on to help minimise our wastage.
Optimising material usage:
Carefully planning our projects to maximize material efficiency and minimize offcuts.
Investing in precision cutting equipment such to minimise errors and maximise the usable yield of materials.
Sourcing Sustainable Materials:
Sourcing our wood from certified sustainable sources, such as those certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).
Explore alternatives to traditional hardwoods, such as bamboo or reclaimed wood, which often have lower environmental impacts.
Reuse and Repurpose Offcuts:
Developing a system for collecting and storing wood offcuts and scraps. These can be repurposed for smaller projects, used as accents or inlays, or sold as craft supplies.
Turning offcuts into unique products such as cutting boards, coasters, or small decorative items.
Implement Manufacturing Principles:
A streamline production process to minimise unnecessary steps and reduce the risk of errors that can lead to wasted materials.
Use just-in-time inventory management to avoid overstocking materials and reduce the likelihood of unused inventory going to waste.
Offer Recycling and Waste Management Programs:
Set up recycling programs for materials such as paper, cardboard, and plastic packaging used in your woodworking operations.
Explore options for recycling wood waste, such as partnering with local recycling centers or biomass facilities that can convert wood scraps into energy or compost.
Engaging with Suppliers and Customers:
Work with suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability and inquire about their practices for minimising waste and environmental impact.
Educating customers about our efforts to reduce waste and encourage them to support environmentally responsible businesses.
Monitoring and Measuring Progress:
Regularly track and analyze our waste generation and disposal practices to identify areas for improvement.
Set measurable goals for waste reduction and track our progress over time to ensure that our efforts are making a meaningful impact.
